What is the significance of studying transportation geography? This article was submitted by Stephanie Meelem at the MIT Technology Review, February 29, 2013. The MIT original site Transportation Research Center was the center of a vast project to map and analyze the spatial expression and distribution of access roads on Detroit’s East Side. Since then, such maps have become very popular in cities because of the potential high value of their data and information about them. But even among the tens of thousands of papers that have already appeared, no significant study has examined the spatial expression of access to roads in Detroit. This paper has laid out a new set of tools to produce the most accurate, comprehensive map and analysis of access to roads in Detroit. It addresses two foundational questions to which we join: (1) What is the significance of studying mobility on roads in the urban environment; and (2) What is the contribution of any proposed strategy to the map’s usefulness?
