The particular type of piece we study was typically a pale wood rather than white, painted over with the appropriate brush. The set pieces for the paintings were individually dark brown or light brown, and the remaining pieces are actually painted white to show off the fine details of the painted text. Since the main composition is known to have goldwork in the medium of a dark background, the painted white text, along with others, is colored with rubies (yes!) and aluminum, and may however be taken in any other medium.
