What is the connection between sustainable agricultural practices and soil conservation? Sustainable agriculture has been recognised as a component of two-dimensional space for at least 20 years. Yet its organic way of production and conservation has also been recognised as losing its value over the decades. In this chapter, we look at the role of sustainability in promoting soil conservation across a three-dimensional space and we build on this analysis. The book is focussed on the benefits of soil conservation in modern farming and we begin with an article that studies the use of sustainable agriculture also in natural surroundings. Focusing on organic soil, we examine whether there is a connection between the number of species and diversity, within a single zone, and grass quality. We consider whether farming practices have impacts and how they impact soil conservation. We then examine the evidence in the context of plant diversity and how they affect soil conservation. Finally, we assess the health effects of being organic from a global perspective. Subsequent chapters tackle the impacts of ecological changes on soil biodiversity, soil organic carbon and plant health, and the state of sustainable farming.
